Hand painted decorative kitchen storage boxes by Jean King Novelties, Melbourne, Australia. Circa 1930's/40's.
2 of these boxes was made to store wax paper or can be used for glad wrap, beautifully painted with whimsical characters. The other for match box storage, with a front pocket for loose matches.
A lovely piece of history, there is a Jean King painted box within the Powerhouse Collection (an Australian museum group).

Jean King produced hand painted wooden household items in the early part of the century until resigning from her partnership in 1947.
